Self Study 1 -- Getting Started in Blender


Following the supplied tutorial, I made a simple barrel prop that can be seen below. I found this quite a useful refresher, and was particularly interested in the texture painting aspect (I'm looking forward to seeing how it imports into unity).



This week, I decided to model one of the light towers found at Hobart wharf. These towers have always stood out as something unique to the Hobart water front to me (I'm not sure if they actually are) and they were an interesting shape. For reference, they look like this (I also used this image for reference when making the model):



The model itself was comprised mostly of basic shapes, with the hardest part being the cage that contains the light at the top. I made use of the proportional editing tool in blender for the subtle curve on the top and the inward slant on the cage bars. The model as it appears without texture can be seen below.

I added a simple background image to the scene (a HDRI), added some light sources, and gave object some simple materials. Here is the result:
